Blackpool Gears Up for Exciting Cycling Events!

The resort has already bid successfully to the Cycling England organisation to be a Cycling Town, meaning a total budget
of £5.68m will be made available to invest in cycling up to March 2011.

Blackpool Council recognises cycling as a versatile transport mode and a great way to stay fit and healthy, reduce
congestion and pollution. The Local Transport Plan (LTP) has funded signed cycle routes, new crossing facilities, junction
improvements and lots of cycle parking.

Johnny Clay British Cycling’s Cyclesport and Membership Director said ’Blackpool’s 2009 Cycling Events Programme is
arguably one of the best and most comprehensive programmes in the country, providing the spectacle of world class
riders and events which complements a range of community based cycling initiatives. We are delighted to be working in
partnership with Blackpool Council to develop such a prestigious programme.’

Tour SeriesThe National Tour Series - a revolutionary new concept in cycle racing which brings unique and exciting team
racing to the streets of the UK – will be coming to Blackpool on 9 June.
Unlike any other cycling series in the world The Tour Series is not based on individual athletic performance, but instead
on team performance. 10 teams of five highly-tuned professional cyclists will engage in combat against each other to
become overall Tour Series champions. With 50 cyclists racing for the best top three positions over one hour of fast-
paced and attacking racing around a 1-1.5km circuit, there are guaranteed to be thrills and spills.

As one of the national hosts, Blackpool will celebrate the National Tour Series with a range of accompanying events and
activities for young people and the local community. For full details, click here.
